PHYSICAL PRINTS NEGATIVELY AFFECT THE ENVIRONMENT
The reason we’re shifting to more digital products is simple; physical prints negatively affect the environment. Here’s how.
- Traditional printing processes involve the consumption of vast amounts of paper, contributing to deforestation and intensive energy use.
- Inks used in photo printing contain a plethora of harmful chemicals that pose environmental threats. The manufacturing, disposal, and use of these inks contribute to air and water pollution, affecting ecosystems and wildlife.
- Photos, albums, and promotional materials generate a substantial amount of waste. Disposing of these materials often ends up in landfills, contributing to the global waste crisis.
- Transportation of physical prints involves energy consumption, and the emissions contribute to a significant carbon footprint.
As you can see, the journey of a printed photo involves many stages, each leaving its environmental mark.
VOLUME PHOTOGRAPHY
Unlike other genres of photography, such as fine art and portrait, volume photography revolves around capturing large quantities of images. When photographing school picture events or large sports teams, the image count can easily range in the hundreds or even thousands. Merely processing, storing, printing, and transporting this many photographs has a detrimental effect on our environment.
Our solution. By only offering digital images to our volume-photography market, we reduce the impact photography has on the environment while offering our clients a more versatile photography experience. This is a win for everyone.
WHAT ALL THIS MEANS TO OUR CLIENTS
For now, this digital shift is for our volume-photography clients only. Those affected are students, athletes, and family members who purchase photos from school and sports photo events.
Here’s what it means to our clients.
- We will only photograph, process, and offer photos to those who prepay. This minimizes the resources used for processing and archiving unwanted images.
- The viewing of photos is from an online gallery. No printed forms or printed proofs.
- All photos are delivered as digital downloads. Physical prints are no longer offered.
- Included with every digital download is a Print Release. Should our client want or require physical prints, they are free to print them from any lab of their choosing.
By following these policies, we will reduce paper consumption, eliminate photo processing chemical usage, and lower the carbon footprint associated with print production and transportation.
